Old laptop most likely revived! (Zepto 6324W)
November 9, 2010
Long time no write, this time i figured i’d give a tip that might potentially help other people with similar problems. For a couple of years ago I bought a Zepto 6324W, it was all the hype back then, they had all the goodies, good performance and nice prices.
However, in retrospect, I kind’ve regret buying the computer, due to the extreme heat it produces, it has a tendency to overheating and I might try to fix that some day by changing the thermal paste and polishing the heatsink surface that goes against the CPU.
Now to the real deal, this computer went in and out for service a couple of times, and in the end it seemed like the problem just came back, over and over again, until finally Zepto went bancrupt and shut down.
By this time my laptop had some crazy screen problems, it seemed to work fine when it was attached to an external monitor, but the lcd attached didn’t work. However, whenever the moon was right and some arbitrary planets were in the correct position (really…) the laptop worked like a charm, and the screen turned off, I started connecting all this stuff to random things like pulling the bios battery and doing other various things, and each time I did these things, I had varied success.
I put the laptop on the shelf for almost a year, thinking it was no more then a paperweight (expensive such). However just the other day I felt like i should go to the bottom with whatever was wrong, the warranty was blown anyways, so I could hardly make things worse. I tried to disassemble the laptop completely, failing miserably (taking apart a laptop is hard… :O) after a bit of google-foo, I came upon this excellent page:
Drivers Zepto Laptops & Desktops Computers
which basically described my problem EXACTLY, so I went forth and removed the bezel around the monitor, trying to clean the contacts to the inverter as advised on the above mentoned page, but to no avail, it was just as random as before.

The next logical step was to detach the whole inverter and take a look at it, and figure out if I needed to order a new one, this is when i came to the core of the problem…
The transformer magnet had CRACKED straight off, and was sliding in and out of the transformer freely, no wonder it didnt work, I pushed the magnet back into the transformer carefully, and attached the inverter again making sure the inverter “looked” alright. And the laptop worked (for a while, approx 5 minutes until the screen shut down, and the inverter made some weird noises… eww..). The conclusion was clear, I had to get my hands on a new inverter, I checked out the serial number on the inverter board and made some googling on it, the number on the inverter for the Zepto 6324W was D7312-B001-S3-0 and I only found some hong-kongish stores which held it, among them zelectric.com and battery-adapter.com. I found the pages a little suspicious… don’t really know what bothered me, but I just did. However having no other option I figured I’d order one from battery-adapter.com for like $18.98. I got confirmation mail from them today (ordered it yesterday) that they had shipped it, wheooo!

So all in all, I havn’t plugged it in yet, but as I get it I will post another note on how it went, the final point is that spending $18.98 on saving a (originally) $1500 laptop is a win win for me, and I really hope that this will do the trick!
